Vassiliki © Copyright George Papavgeris, September 2002 a personal indulgence, it tells the story of how my maternal grandfather met my grandmother in 1903 when he was 17 and she 19 ; he saw her dancing at a market fair, fell in love and married her within weeks - unheard of in those days and in their culture. Named after my gran. Sunny day in June it was When I went to the market Village square was full of noise And full of brimming baskets. Strawberries just picked for you (fresher than the morning dew) Candied apples, angel hair (sweeter than the morning air) All the pleasures of the fair That market day in summer. From the corner of the street The sound I heard of fiddles Crowds clapping and this girl Dancing in the middle. Lips of red and eyes of blue (fresher than the morning dew) Coloured ribbons in her hair (sweeter than the morning air) And my heart I lost right there That market day in summer. If you asked I couldn't tell you Then what I was feeling; Eyes I had only for her And both my legs were numb Easy now to think that this Was only the beginning How could I imagine then All the happy times that were to come? Not a moment did I waste And soon we got to talking. Hand in hand that afternoon Green fields we went a-walking. Bed of flowers for us two (fresher than the morning dew) She let down her golden hair (sweeter than the morning air) How we loved without a care That market day in summer. By the evening I was so Afraid in case I lose her So my name I offered her My wife if she would be. And before too long she led The dancing at our wedding Summer evenings now I play The fiddle, and she dances just for me. In a day my life she changed My heart with love still burning As grandchildren round our knees The dancing steps are learning. Looking at her eyes of blue (fresher than the morning dew) Thinking of the days we shared (sweeter than the morning air) gladly I would go back there that market day in summer. |
