Thieves of innocence © Copyright George Papavgeris, June 2003 They came at night First thing we knew they had come crashing through the door Their shadows tall and scary in the torchlight With just one blow they dropped my father to the floor They grabbed me by the arm, They said to fear no harm It was my chance to fight the people's enemy, they said, But all I saw was red As it was spreading all around my father's head. So hard at first We trained incessantly in weapons of all sorts So hot and dusty we were praying for a cloudburst A barefoot army wearing still our tattered shorts Free drugs for our relief And slogans for belief Some times to make us tougher we would go to sleep unfed And all we saw was red As one by one our childhood memories had fled. Who was it that had given them the right to steal the innocence from children? And did they have no memory of being young and innocent themselves? And here's the crime We hungry children grew to fighters big and hard And without thinking we would kill just for a good time Worse than our faces, our consciences were scarred We'd look all day and night For enemies to fight But our solution worse was than the problem, people said And all we saw was red As all compassion from our hearts had duly bled. We come at night To our demands obedience must be absolute Our blackened faces well disguised in the moonlight It's rape and blood that we now crave, and not just loot No mothers' arms can keep The kids safe in their sleep We'll take good care of them and soon to violence they'll be bred Till all they see is red And they're themselves the thieves of innocence instead. |
