Silent Majority

a "white collar protest song" railing at the faceless powers that be; I'd like to hear it sung by pinstripe-suited, bowler-hatted protesters some May Day (dream on, George).

You pay me peanuts but that doesn't mean that I'm a monkey
It would be nice to show me some respect
I'm always at your beck and call but I'm nobody's flunkey
So at your feet I'll never genuflect.
And when I say that I can't work another blooming Sunday
You'll have to take my word that this is so
'cause nothing is so urgent that it cannot wait for Monday
and slavery was abolished long ago.

The vast majority's like me, just ordinary people
Not bureaucrats that lord it miles from here
But when I go to the pub to have my favourite tipple
I find they even standardised the beer.
They carved the land and killed the sheep and drew their lines on water
And did they ask us if we thought it fair
But in this crazy world we live, I'm sure they will not falter
Next year they will be rationing the air.

I thought that civil servants should serve and should be civil
At least they'd do their jobs like I do mine
But the way they treat me often is positively evil
And if I don't comply I get a fine.
Without complaint I always pay my duties and my taxes
But what they do with that I'd like to know
'cause usually it seems to me they're sitting on their jacksies
and little care for citizens they show.

So now you've fallen out with some other country's leaders
The ones that you called friends a year ago
And you want me to accept the stories that you feed us
And to the slaughter silently go.
So clearly you believe that I will put up with your quarrels
And that your wars for profit I will fight
But you don't understand that little people have big morals
And know what is wrong and what is right.

CHORUS
So if you push me
I'm telling you beware
The silent majority will rise
And if you push me
You'll find that I don't scare
'cause I'm already used to sacrifice.
