Silence of friends © Copyright George Papavgeris, Aug 2004 I've seen them sitting side by side Relaxing from an afternoon's hard playing Like grownups contemplating All the trials of the day that has just been. Their silence more deafening For all the things it still seemed to be saying As if those two could hear each other's Thoughts and live inside each other's dream. So young and inexperienced already they possessed some greater wisdom No need for empty words for them, No need to build a bridge or break a fence. Too much, or nothing left to say No difference at all it made between them Their simple hearts were close enough To hear and speak the silence of friends. I've seen them too in later life Sharing a pint in quiet contemplation No need for them to share a joke Or tell a story just to pass the time. Like trains that wait in parallel Identical, but not in destination Before the signal comes again To send them to the next stop on their line. Around them other customers Were busy filling time with idle chatter But just who was the happier On your viewpoint I guess that it depends. Too much, or nothing left to say For these two mates it did not seem to matter For their two hearts were close enough To hear and speak the silence of friends. Well met again my friend, it's been too long since you and I have been together. To catch up with each other's news Would take us days, and just hours we can spare. You went your way and I went mine, Yet we are still two birds of the same feather So much has happened since last time, I see it in the colour of your hair. The stories that we have to tell Would fill at least a day with pleasant banter But I prefer to simply sit Enjoying being with you till this day ends. Too much, or nothing left to say, Between us such a thing would never matter Because our hearts are close enough, To hear and speak the silence of friends. |
