One by one © Copyright George Papavgeris, December 2005 One by one they're leaving me, The heroes of my youth The healers of my troubles And the seekers after truth. One by one they up and go And heading for the door Knowing that in doing so They are making room for more. And it's not so much the loneliness As they rise up to the sky But the feeling that it's down to me To keep the banner high. For I know this is a circle And the circle never ends I just hope that I have played my part And been worthy of my friends One by one they're leaving me, The sharers of my food The ones I tried to follow And the ones I never could. One by one they're leaving me, Some young and some no more And I just glimpse the light outside As they go through the door. And it's not so much the company For I remember that But the sight of the empty chairs Where each one of them sat. For I know this is a circle And the circle never ends I just hope that I have played my part And been worthy of my friends One by one they're leaving me, The playmates of my days The keepers of my marbles And the finders of my ways. One by one they go to sup In some celestial bar And my bitter gets more bitter still As I seek them in the stars. And it's not so much the knowledge There's a limit to my stay But I hope that I can find them And I hope they'll let me play. For I know this is a circle And the circle never ends I just hope that I have played my part And been worthy of my friends |
