Hills above the City © Copyright George Papavgeris, August 2007 When you reach the hills above the city Turn and take a look at what you left behind From up here now everything is pretty Distance to ugliness is blind A better view you'll never find. From the hills the towerblocks can look so graceful and serene And the graffiti from up here is less obscene Even garbage cans are shiny and the parks are sparkling green Can't see a single face Can't see the rats, only the race. When you reach the hills above the city It's your memories that are the biggest foe Don't look back with envy but with pity At all the things that made you go There's nothing left for you below. ------------------------------------------------- When you reach the hills above the city What you see and hear prepare to disbelieve It's a heartless monster with no pity A siren calling the naïve False lover trying to deceive From the hills you cannot see all the injustice and the crime No way to tell from here the scandals and the slime And the way folks treat each other has no reason and no rhyme Greed, selfishness and rage Lions and tigers in a cage. When you reach the hills above the city It's your memories that are the biggest foe Don't look back with envy but with pity At all the things that made you go There's nothing left for you below. ------------------------------------------------- From the hills you can see further that the city will allow You see the future and the past, not just the now And the life you left behind, you can choose to disavow You're a new person now Select the furrow you will plough. When you reach the hills above the city It's your memories that are the biggest foe Don't look back with envy but with pity At all the things that made you go There's nothing left for you below. |
