Hello And Goodbye © Copyright George Papavgeris, January 2003 human frailty and capitulation, in this case through the eyes of a Lady of the Night whose dreams are slowly fading, yet never totally. Midmorning already, the sun shining bright, It's a beautiful day, not a cloud. And the market outside in the street is attracting a crowd. The curtains she draws and the shutters she closes To keep out the noise and the light But she still hears the songs and the banter and jokes of last night. She shuffles her way to the kitchen and puts on the kettle, But she changes her mind and instead has some hair of the dog, For no tea and no coffee her dreams and her worries can settle And the brandy at least helps her lose all such thoughts in a fog. So far from the carefree young girl that she once was That none of the young men could tame... Though under her lipstick and makeup she still feels the same. Her kisses went first, and her body came next, And the rest is a sorry old tale And with every new customer more of her dreams go for sale. There were quite a few who would promise a ring and a wedding But promises soon disappear with the first morning light And rarely her dreams now will bless her with such happy ending And in any case none of her dresses for church would be right. Her mantlepiece full of the presents and gifts That the story of her life could have told All tokens of love on the cheap but expensively sold. She changes the bedding and tidies the room And of last night soon little remains. The carpet is cleaned, but her soul always carries the stains. The sun will be setting before she will open the window Stale perfume and smoke to replace with the fresh evening breeze And slowly but surely the thoughts of the morning will dwindle As the first of tonight's customers she embraces with ease. CHORUS And she would be a wife and a mother But her prayers receive no reply; So tonight it will still be "hello", and tomorrow "goodbye". |
