Harbour lights © Copyright George Papavgeris, August 2005 Like a bright string of pearls Clean and shiny and dazzling On the neck of the town That I once called my own Like the eyes of its girls Both beguiling and puzzling, Harbour lights at the end of the foam. As the night's purple cloak Covers angel and sinner And a blanket of mist starts to fall Over distance and time Only hearts can consider Silent sirens insistently call And they burn in my mind For as night time approaches And wherever I happen to roam Harbour lights now are calling me home. Winter snow for a gown Neon lights for her jewels The town looks to the sea For a lover's return On her face like a smile With anxiety fuelled Hopeful harbour lights constantly burn Through the wind and the rain Never wavering or dimming Silent welcome they seem to spell out Make the sailor's heart glad And the migrant's eyes brimming Votive candles that never go out And they burn in my mind For as night time approaches And wherever I happen to roam Harbour lights now are calling me home. Yet the harbour lights lie Hiding more than they're showing For the shadows they throw Only help hide the truth If they look like a smile It's a smile that is knowing Like the face of a whore past her youth It's a face full of pain And with memories plenty And it's loving, but not free of guile Still she will treat you kind If you slip her a twenty And she'll see you all right for a while Yet it burns in my mind For as night time approaches And wherever I happen to roam Harbour lights now are calling me home. |
