Give me the good news © Copyright George Papavgeris, May 2003 Why are only bad things newsworthy? I know the world we live in is not perfect But I have had my fill of your refrain Bad news constantly following each other Like coaches on a pessimistic train. But someone just showed kindness to another And someone lent his shoulder to a friend And somebody is nursing their old father And a landlord just refused to raise the rent. In spillages of chemicals you revel In war's blood you wallow like a pig And when a quake some villages has levelled You make sure I don't miss a single thing Yet somewhere Nature manages to flourish And somewhere water trickles crystal clear In mid-disaster people find new courage And enemies of old now friends are dear. Last year you say was better than the current Yet not as happy as the year before. With misery to ghoulish tastes you pander As if there were no good news any more But somewhere the sun must now be shining It doesn't shine on me, but I don't mind Enough to know there is a silver lining Enough to know it isn't me that's blind. (chorus) Give me the good news, even up the score Give me the good news, no pestilence and war And if the good news that there is does not suffice, Just give me what good news you have And fill the rest with lies. |
